Vietnam wall goes on display today
Read Vietnam wall goes on display today   "The Wall That Heals," a traveling half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., will be on exhibit at the University of South Carolina Upstate beginning today as part of the university's 40th anniversary celebration. The exhibit, located on the Main Quad behind the Administration Building, is free. Volunteers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily to assist visitors in finding names on The Wall. SC State Guard / US Coast Guard Auxiliary Training
Guardsmen from the South Carolina State Guard and the US Coast Guard Auxiliary patrolled the area around Drum Island today near the Ravenel Bridge.  "If this were a real emergency, a hurricane, a man made event, terrorist attack, that's why we're out here under the bridge making sure this area is safe," said Lt. Emergency groups, National Guard to gather in county to improve quake preparedness
The scene: An earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale strikes Beaufort County. In the chaotic aftermath as National Guard troops rush in to assist local emergency officials, terrorists attack local military bases or key infrastructure. SC Guardsmen train for hurricane emergencies
NORTH AFB, SC (WIS) - South Carolina State Guardsmen were in the Midlands Saturday, training for disaster. With hurricane season in full swing now, hundreds of guardsmen and woman used the day to hone their skills by taking part in training at north air base. During a natural disaster, the guard assists with lane reversals on major highways, and helps keep needed materials flowing into the state. The South Carolina State Guard, 2nd brigade honor detail, recently presented its military history program to fifth-graders at Pacolet Elementary School, and Lt. Col. Ballard Brown was impressed by the students' curiosity. "The students were very attentive and eager to learn about America's military history," says Mr. Brown. WWII Veteran, Guard Commander Dies at 84
Henry Wedemeyer Theiling, a Charleston native and World War II veteran who served in uniform most of his adult life, holding several commands, died Friday. He was 84. A year after graduating from Charleston High School in 1939, Theiling joined an apprenticeship program at the Charleston Navy Yard, studying ship fitting. He began his military career in 1942, receiving his wings and a commission as 2nd lieutenant in 1944, then left for Europe where he was a B-26 bomber navigator flying missions over Germany and Central Europe. Nathaniel Green, a former pastor, said he was compelled to start an academy to reach wayward boys. “This is my passion. I feel called to do this. I’d rather do this than pastor a church,” he said. “My heartbeat right now is trying to save these young men.” Five years ago, he started Eagle Military Academy in North Charleston with eight boys, a number that grew to as many as 80. “I took my own money and started a school in the back of a church,” Mr. Green said. ASSOCIATED PRESS, COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina State Guard wants to set up an air wing to help out the National Guard during emergencies.
