NORTH AFB, SC (WIS) - South Carolina State Guardsmen were in the Midlands Saturday, training for disaster.
With hurricane season in full swing now, hundreds of guardsmen and woman used the day to hone their skills by taking part in training at north air base.
During a natural disaster, the guard assists with lane reversals on major highways, and helps keep needed materials flowing into the state.
The folks who participated are all volunteers, and weren't paid to be there.
"There's no compensation for this, it takes time away from families. But it's worth it in times of disaster and in times of need," said Capt. Scott Malyerck.
The South Carolina State Guard consists of 1,500 volunteers who come from all different walks of life.
